A new chapter for Fraser Field…

January 14th, 2008 · No Comments

As you may know, the North Shore Spirit, of the independent CanAm League, is no more. The team’s owner, Nick Lopardo, gave it his best shot. He spent millions of his own money to refurbish a broken-down Fraser Field in Lynn. But in the end, it just didn’t work out, and Lopardo closed up shop after the 2007 season ended.

Now, a new team will be moving in…the North Shore Navigators, of the New England College Baseball League. You can read an article from the Lynn Daily Item about it HERE. The Navigators are not exactly a new team…they used to be the Holyoke Giants…but they’re new to us here in the North Shore area.

I am familiar with the NECBL…when we’ve vacationed up in Maine, we’ve gone to Sanford Mainers games at Goodall Park. This isn’t professional baseball…this is a collegiate league, as the name says, and these guys play for fun, and in the hope of perhaps being seem by MLB scouts. The league gets its players from colleges all over the country.

I’d been wondering what they were going to do with Fraser Field now that the Spirit is gone. Although Nick Lopardo did remove many of his improvements, such as the video board, he couldn’t have taken EVERYTHING…so the place is still in pretty good shape for a new team to come in.

I’m excited about this new team, and I look forward to going to Fraser Field to see them.
