Bye-bye J-Bay?

It looks very likely.  It’s been reported that Jason Bay is about to sign a contract with the New York Mets.  This is less than a week after it was reported that the Sox were still considering making Bay another offer to get him to stay.

It’s disturbing as to how much of this is about the money.  The Sox had offered J-Bay 4 years for $60 million.  The Mets are reportedly offering 4 years for $65 million.  When you’re getting into the tens of millions here, is $5 million really such a big deal?

When you are a regular person, more money does make a difference.  I once was offered two different cooking jobs on the same day.  One was cooking food for luxury suite holders at the Garden, for just $7 an hour.  The other was making pizzas at a brewpub for $10 per hour.  Yeah, $3 an hour doesn’t seem like much, but when the pay is that low, it makes a HUGE difference.  So, of course I took the job that paid more money.  The job at the Garden might have been more interesting, maybe I could have scored some free Bruins or Celtics tix or something…but I could not afford to work for such low pay!

It ended up working out for the best at the end, taking the $10/hour pizza job.  Since it was a brewpub, I got my first introduction to craft brews, the love of which is still with me now.  And  I met my ow-husband, Mike, at the brewpub, as well.  So I made the right choice in more ways than one!

But back to J-Bay and other rich athletes…are their standards of living so high, that they can’t live for four years on $60 million, that they really NEED $5 million more to survive?  I don’t think so.  I think it’s more about ego.  Either that, or there’s the possibility that Bay just didn’t like playing in Boston, or even playing in the American League.  Who knows?

Oh, well…nothing any of us can do about it.  I’ll miss him, but we have to move on.
