tales from the ballpark header image 2

If you build it, they will come

As you may know, we spent Labor Day weekend up in Maine, and went to two Portland Sea Dogs games. We could not have asked for better weather.

On Saturday night, we got to see Clay Buchholz pitch. That was very cool, and he was awesome, going eight innings, allowing no runs and only two hits.

Sunday was the annual Fan Appreciation “Field of Dreams” game. The players were all dressed in throwback “Portland Eskimos” uniforms, and came onto the field from a “cornfield” that was set up against the center field wall…just like in the movie. Then they came into the stands to shake hands with the fans and thank them for coming to the ballpark. We got to shake hands with pitchers Mike James and Adam Mills.

You know what would have made this event even cooler? If there was a way for them to have done it at night. In the movie, it was nighttime when the players of the past came out of the cornfield and onto Kevin Costner’s baseball field. It was beautifully lit with Progress lighting, or something like that.

But that’s not really doable in the summer, I suppose, because it gets dark too late.  They’d have to start the game at something like 8:30 - 9PM to get the full effect.  Oh, well.

Also, on Sunday, the Sea Dogs clinched their playoff spot…even though they lost that game to the Fisher Cats.  But the Magic Number was ONE that day, so either a Sea Dogs win or a Binghamton Mets loss would do it.  So the playoffs start this week, with the Sea Dogs playing the Trenton Thunder.  Too bad we probably won’t be able to go to any of the games hosted in Portland.  Maybe it might be doable if they make it to the next round, we shall see.

Anyway, it was a great weekend!
