I’ve been talking about this for eons…
…and I finally did it! Bought myself a little laptop netbook, that is.
I’ve been scouring the sale items at Buy.com for months now. I saw a lot of good deals, but I couldn’t order them because of Mike being out of work due to being in the hospital. They ship via FedEx, and I can’t get FedEx deliveries at home. The FedEx drivers around here have screwed up almost EVERY time I used them, so I gave up. But now Mike is back at work, and I can once again have Buy.com items delivered to his office. I ordered it and it arrived the other day.
This little Asus Eee PC netbook is not the exact one that I got, but it’s very similar. The one I got is no longer in stock at Buy.com. Mine doesn’t have a webcam like this one does, and mine runs on Linux rather than Windows. But some people prefer Windows, it’s all a matter of personal choice.
Now, this was NOT designed to be your primary machine, by any means. It doesn’t have a CD/DVD-ROM drive, but you can hook up an external drive to it to install software from a disk. What this is good for, and why I bought it, is for computing on the go, mostly for blogging, surfing the web, and checking my email. I was tired of having to use Mike’s work laptop for my personal needs, I wanted to have my own machine, on which I could put my bookmarks, save my passwords, etc.
This machine works very nicely, and does what I need it to do. Its small size and light weight make it easy to tote around. Yesterday, I took it into a bar that had free WiFi, and it worked great.
What else is great about this? The price. You can’t really go wrong for under $200, plus FREE shipping. You can opt for a faster shipping option for an additional charge, but 9 times out of 10, the free shipping option is much quicker than the 7-9 business days as they tell you.
So far, I am very happy with my purchase. Now, do ballparks have free WiFi? Maybe I should take it to the Worcester Tornadoes game on Sunday and find out. What do the media people do? Do they have somewhere to plug their laptops into the internet up in the press box, or do they have WiFi?
According to the movie Fever Pitch, perhaps Fenway Park has WiFi. Unless, that is, Drew Barrymore’s character was working offline on her laptop at the ballpark, where she got hit with a foul ball. So if you use a laptop at the game, be aware that this could happen to you!
Also, if you do carry a laptop or any camera equipment for that matter, PLEASE make sure it’s in a water-proof bag. You never know when someone sitting behind you spills something, and it lands on your tote bag. This happened to me once at McCoy Stadium, home of the PawSox. Some kid behind us spilled a whole bottle of water, and some of it seeped into my purse and got stuff wet in there. Luckily, my cameras were not damaged. So now, I use that silly pink Fisher Cats tote bag that they were giving out for Mother’s Day and that I wasn’t going to take at first. But it has a zippered top and a plastic lining, and it’s very sturdy, so my stuff should be safe in there from any spills or rain delays!
So, if you are in the market for an inexpensive netbook for computing on the go, you can’t go wrong with one of these. Works great, and the price is right! I’m very happy!
