Junior Griffey on the verge of 600…

He hit #597 the other night. You can follow the whole thing HERE.

The Reds are on a long road trip right now, so #600 may or may not happen at home. Still, I wonder how much they will be promoting this…will they be giving out all sorts of souvenirs, marketing pens, and the like? I can see that MLB is trying to cash in, by trying to get people to follow Griffey Jr’s road to 600 by subscribing to their MLB.TV service.

It saddens me that Junior Griffey had to waste so many years with injury problems. It seems that he’s disappeared for months at a time due to injury, but he keeps coming back. Can you imagine what his numbers would be today, if he’d been healthy all these years? Maybe he’d have been the one to break Henry Aaron’s record, and not Barry Bonds. I can’t stand that guy; in addition to the high likelihood that he cheated, he’s also an arrogant ass who keeps forgetting that there is “no I in TEAM”.

But Griffey probably won’t break the record, unless he can hang on for at least five more years. According to Wikipedia, he turns 40 in two and a half years. So if he’s gonna break the reord, he’s running out of time in which to do it.

Too bad. I guess all I can hope for now is that some young, up-and-coming player will be able to bring legitimacy back to the record someday, sometime during my lifetime.
