November Baseball
Whose brilliant idea was it to start the World Series on October 28? This means that they will be playing baseball until almost Thanksgiving, it it goes the full seven games.
Not that I’d mind seeing baseball for longer, but there are other considerations. Namely…COLD WEATHER! And possibly SNOW.
Okay, so if the WS turns out to be between the LA Dodgers and the LA Angels (who have both already clinched), the weather will not be a problem. If the Atlanta Braves make the playoffs, their home games should be okay, too.
But look at all of the other teams that have either clinched their spots, or are still in contention to do so. Let’s start with the Red Sox and Y*****s. It gets cold up here in the northeast in November, this is usually the time most people start turning their furnaces on.
And how about the only American League teams that are still in contention – the Minnesota Twins and the Detroit Tigers. Now, the Twinkies will be okay for their home games, because they’re still playing in the Hubie-Dome (their new ballpark, Target Field, is set to open in 2010). I saw pictures of Target Field, and it is NOT a dome. At least they will no longer have to worry about ceiling tiles falling down and possibly killing people, like what happened years ago at the old KingDome in Seattle. Fortunately, nobody was in the stands when the tiles started falling.
But I digress. If Detroit makes the playoffs, the weather will be a problem there, too…I think it gets even colder and snowier there than it does around here. And Comerica Park is NOT a domed stadium.
On the National League side of things, St. Louis has clinched their spot…not sure how cold it gets there, though. Philadelphia, another northeastern city, may well clinch tonight, and it gets cold there, too. And finally, there’s the Colorado Rockies…but then again, it probably has been known to snow there in September.
I could not sit in the stands in the freezing cold for 3-4 hours, no way. This is why I do not go to football games…I’d rather watch them in the warmth of my own home, or at a bar.
I don’t think it would hurt to shorten the regular season by a week. But then, that’s less revenue for the teams and MLB. And that’s what it’s all about, isn’t it?
