CLEARWATER, Fla. — In response to Hank Steinbrenner’s statement that the Yankees’ brand trumped that of Red Sox Nation from a marketing standpoint, Boston CEO and president Larry Lucchino fired back.
“I don’t deny there are Yankee fans everywhere. But it’s blind of him not to see the phenomenon that is Red Sox Nation,” Lucchino told the Boston Globe.
Lucchino also told the paper that he appreciated how Steinbrenner had “picked up on the Star Wars metaphor” from an earlier quote.
“He said he was happy to be Darth Vader and we are happy to be the Rebel Alliance.”
However, it was Lucchino who first referred to the Yankees as the “Evil Empire” in 2002, after the club signed Cuban defector Jose Contreras – a pitcher the Red Sox desperately wanted at the time.
“I don’t think it was bad at all, or even controversial,” Steinbrenner told The Record of Lucchino’s famous quote.
“He was just kind of equating us to what [President] Reagan referred to the Soviet Union as in the early ’80s.
“I certainly took exception to the ‘evil’ part,” Steinbrenner said. “But I certainly understood his point.”
Now, once again, we bring back the Y***** Terror Alert Widget. All you have to do is to insert the following code on your blog or website, and I’ll do the rest. I will change what graphic appears in accordance to the position of the Y*****s in the standings.
