So Straw has a book out
Darryl Strawberry, that is. He was an awesome player who threw away a fantastic career by doing drugs, among other things. One can only imagine what his numbers would have been like had he kept his nose clean (literally!).
For a time, I was convinced that one day, Straw would be found in some sleazy motel room somewhere, dead of an overdose. Fortunately, he managed to clean up his act and he’s lived to tell the tale.
I saw him a few weeks ago on the Morning Show with Mike & Juliet. Apparently, he found religion, and that saved his life, he says. He also talked about his son, who is either in the NBA, or headed there, I forget the exact details. He and his wife also run a foundation which works to help children and adults with autism.
Anyhoo, Mike and I were having lunch at the bar of the 99 in Salem, NH (we were up that way to buy Powerball tickets). They had ESPN on the TVs, and Straw was on there, talking about his book, which is titled Straw: Finding My Way.
Am I going to buy and read this? I don’t know. On the one hand, I’m impressed that this guy managed to turn his life around, get off drugs, and all. But, not being a religious person, I fear that it might be overly preachy about being saved by God and all. I’d be a bit put off by that.
I’m sure that part of the reason he wrote it was for the money…I’m sure he pissed away most of the money he made playing baseball on cocaine, hookers, rehab, and attorneys’ fees. But writing his life story is a sure sight better than doing something skeevy like selling his wife’s engagement rings or something like that.
I hope the book does well, though. Religion aside, perhaps it will serve as a cautionary tale to young people, especially young athletes, as to what can happen if you get hooked oin drugs. That it’s much better if you never start dong any of this stuff in the first place.
Maybe I’ll just wait for the paperback. I have a long enough reading list at the moment anyway, including a book that I will be reviewing here very soon!
