tales from the ballpark header image 2

Well, yesterday was supposed to be…

August 18th, 2008 · 1 Comment

…our last Fisher Cats game of the season. The last Sunday home game in our Sunday Funday mini-plan. It was a nice time, for the most part.

We got there about half an hour after the game started. See, I overslept wicked late, prolly due to some annoying side effects from the Prozac I’ve been taking for anxiety attacks. That stuff is ruining my life worse than not having it was, that’s prolly why I’ve been so crazy lately.

I am going to try to wean myself off of it, though. Being late to the ballgame sucks, and we still have at least four more to go to before the minor league season ends. Two of my teams, the PawSox and the Sea Dogs, both playoff-bound, so we’ll see what kind of seats we can get on weekends for those.

So we normally leave the house at 11AM for a 1:05 start in Manchester. That gives us an hour to get there, find a place to park for free on the street, and catch the shuttle to the ballpark. But yesterday, we left at something like 11:45…I still needed to look semi-presentable, yanno? Shower, wash my hair, use my blemish acne cream and my sunscreen mineral makeup.

Oh…but then there was a huge traffic jam on I-93, near the I-95/128 ramps.  Mike got off the freeway and took back roads through Woburn, and got back onto a now-traffic jam-free I-93.  It was okay for a while, until we hit the MA/NH border, there was another ginormous traffic jam.  But most of it got off at the exit to go to Canobie Lake Park, so maybe that’s what was causing it.  People who wanted to visit the amusement park on a beautiful day, with NO rain in the forecast…for once!

Anyhoo, once we got into Manchester, we knew that it would be way too late to find a free parking space that wasn’t a hundred mile walk from the ballpark.  And it was late enough whereas the shuttle was probably done for a while, at least until people were starting to leave the game.  And no way could I have handled the long walk at this time…this is what Prozac does to me, it makes me very shaky and tired at the beginning of the day.  As the day goes on, this wears off and I feel much better.  Strangely enough, drinking a beer helps, even though they say not to drink alcohol while on this drug.  On the days when I don’t drink at all, I tend to feel a lot worse.  I thought about not taking the drug at all yesterday, but decided against it…I popped the daily does in the car on the way up to Manchester, chugged it down with a soda.  But I chose not to take it today, so far, no difference.  We shall see.

Although I think ten bucks is way too much to pay to park in Manchester, I told Mike I wanted to pay it this time, so we could be closer to the ballpark and I’d not have to kill myself walking so far.  His other choice would have been to drop me off at the stadium, park, and walk all the way back himself.  So we paid the ten bucks, and I didn’t die.

It was a good game, but sadly, the Fisher Cats snatched defeat from the jaws of victory.  They were winning, something like 4-1 when it went into the 9th.  But then Altoona had a slugfest in the top of the 9th, and the score ended up being 5-4.  The Fisher Cats got their last licks in the bottom of the 9th, but to no avail…the Altoona Curve won, 5-4.

During the game, they kept advertising their last homestand of the season, vs. the Binghamton Mets.  Mike kept mentioning that August 27 is Clay Buchholz Bobblehead Night, and he knows how much I loves the bobbleheads.  We normally can’t go up there during the week, due to Mike’s work schedule.

But I suggested we let fate decide.  I would go on the Fisher Cats website when we got home, and if they had *our* seats, it’s meant to be, he can take a few hours off from work, and we would go.

Sure enough, it WAS meant to be.  We get to see our beloved Fisher Cats at their home ballpark one more time before their season ends.  We’ll get to see them again, this time in Hadlock Field vs. the Sea Dogs, over Labor Day weekend.  But I’m still not quite ready to let our beloved MerchantsAuto.com Stadium go for the year, not just yet!

And I get a bobblehead, too!  That is, if Mike gets out of work early enough to get me there in time to get it!
