Where Is Roger?
Now here is something I can use…someday when I finally get around to buying a new computer that has a DVD burner, that is. It’s Roxio Easy VHS to DVD software. I ve a lot of old VHS tapes sitting around that I’d like to be able to preserve on DVD, but I thought the only option was to take them to a shop and have them done.
The software package comes with cables for connecting a VCR to a computer. You just use it to upload the contents of the VHS tape to your computer, and then you can easily burn it to a DVD for posterity. The program also works for putting music from your favorite records and tapes to CD or MP3 as well. And best of all, it is on Sale at Buy.com this week. After a $10 rebate, it’s just $38.99, and there is a free shipping option, as well.
One of the first tapes that I’d transfer to DVD is my tape of the infamous “Where Is Roger?” game. This was Game 3 of the 1999 ALCS, Red Sox vs. Y*****s. It was a big deal because the pitching matchup was Pedro Martinez vs. Roger Clemens, something that was very much hyped.
Mike and I decided to go to the Sports Depot in Allston to watch this, because it was a big game, and it woudl be fun to be in a sports bar environment. But I still set the VCR before we left, just in case the place was so packed that we’d not be able to get in, and we missed anything. Besides, I just thought it would be a nice game to have on tape.
We got to the Sports Depot in plenty of time, and got good seats at the bar. This place has ninety-million TVs, so it’s hard to miss anything. They even have TVs in the rest rooms. The one in the ladies’ room was turned off, though…seemed that no one could reach it, it was so high up, and there was no clicker in sight. Being 5′ 10″, I could reach it, and I did. All of those short women were appreciative.
Well, poor Roger got himself shellacked, didn’t last long in the game at all. That made the fans at both Fenway and the Sports Depot to chant, “WHERE IS RO-GER?” The Sox won that game, but too bad they didn’t go on to win the ALCS. We’d have to wait another five years for that.
But I still have that game on tape, and it would be nice to put it on DVD. For my personal viewing only…the original or any DVD copy would not be for sale. I don’t want to get sued by Major League Baseball, yanno?
